Treatment Approaches

The Self Design staff offer a variety of treatment approaches that include: skills development using Acceptance and Committment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT ) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as deeper emotional work using a psychodynamic approach.  In addition, we offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for trauma.

Our goal is to support you in developing better coping skills while you explore who you are and what makes you, you.  Then you will be able to move your life in a new direction.

Improve your coping skills using behavioral treatment approaches.

In order to improve your coping strategies, we can provide exercises to work on inside and outside of sessions, if you would find it helpful.  These exercises will help you work through conflicting feelings, understand your thought patterns more clearly as well as communicate your needs more effectively.  In addition, they will help you explore what is important to you and evaluate if you are living your life consistently with those values.  Some people need to feel active or desire more structure in their treatment, so homework might be assigned to meet those needs; homework that fits the issues you want to tackle.

What is a Psychodynamic treatment approach?

Psychodynamic treatment is about exploring your past and understanding how it impacts your present and future.   We will help you find your authentic self by looking at how you came to be the person you are today and where you may have lost your true self along the way.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

ACT is an approach in which we explore your values as well as identify what gets in the way of living and doing what is important to you.  Then we work on strategies to manage those obstacles; accepting those difficulties and committing to respond to them differently.  ACT offers valuable interventions to address any challenge that arises, with the goal being improving psychological flexibility rather than rigidity.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT addresses how we think about ourselves, our relationships and then world around us.  If some of those thoughts are maladaptive, therefore together we would work on reframing those thoughts into something more productive.  Anxiety and depression lessen by addressing the negative “self talk” and making it more positive.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a type of psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and alleviate symptoms related to trauma, anxiety, and depression. It uses guided eye movements and visualization techniques to replace negative memories with positive imagery, often achieving results in just a few sessions.

Trust does not come easily to most people. Get the validation you need.

Developing a good relationship with your therapist is an essential beginning to this process.  We understand it is not easy to trust and feel vulnerable with a new person.   A positive therapeutic relationship is about feeling understood and heard by your therapist.  We appreciate the necessity of feeling validated in all your pursuits, past and present.  It gives you the strength to make changes in your life and take risks in order to move forward.
